“Violence against abortion clinics became especially common during the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the militant organization Operation Rescue (whose slogan was ‘If you believe abortion is murder, act like it’s murder’) launched nationwide protests aimed to discourage women from entering abortion clinics and to intimidate providers. An especially intense campaign by the group in Wichita, Kansas, in 1991, targeted late-term abortion provider George Tiller; years later, Tiller was murdered while serving as usher in his church by a ‘born-again Christian,’ Scott Roeder.”
