Afzal Upal

Dr. Muhammad Afzal Upal is a professor and department chair at University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He is the co-editor (with Carole M. Cusack) of Brill Handbook of Islamic Sects & Movements and author of Moderate Fundamentalists: Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in the Lens of Cognitive Science of Religion. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles on cognitive science of religion, countering violent extremists, and artificial intelligence. He is also the treasurer and a board member of FACE, an organization focused on cultural change among Muslims that leads to transparent survivor-centered community safety and leader accountability.
